Australian football has been going through a testing period financially, but the Football Federation Australia (FFA) is at least to prepared to try out new ideas. They are proposing a cup competition which would also involve minor league teams from the state leagues.

In Europe cup competitions have declined in importance over time, exemplified by the disappearance of the Cup Winners’ Cup. In countries like Spain top clubs often enter their reserve teams. In the English league cup, second string teams are often played, while the competition for teams in the bottom two leagues, the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, attracts poor attendances in the earlier rounds.
The league is trying to end the lopsided character of the 11-sided league by recruiting a twelth team from Western Sydney, Sydney Rovers, but the club has encountered financial problems. There is strong competition from Australian rules in the populous western suburbs, although that is a more general problem for football in Australia.
