Manchester City have spent £930.4m in their quest for the Premier League, an innovative survey of football finance by the Daily Telegraph reveals.   If City do win the tiltle on Saturday one can expect a resurgence of complaints from United fans about the policies of the Glazers given that United will have had a season without a trophy.

The survey reveals that Premier League clubs generated £2.23bn in the 2010-11 season.  This accounts for almost 0.15 per cent of UK national output, a figure that I have not seen calculated before.

However, clubs spent £285.8m more than they earned, although that is not a massive figure when viewed against total turnover.   However, some clubs are clearly not generating enough in earnings to sustain themselves.  According to the analysis, they include Aston Villa, relegated Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Everton and West Ham United who need to win the play off final to return to the top flight.
