The second takeover of the day has been announced with Charlton Athletic being taken over by a consortium fronted by popular former chief executive Peter Varney.   Such a consortium has been known to be interested in bidding for some time.

They are currently undertaking due diligence and it is hoped that the deal will be sealed on Christmas Eve as a yuletide present for the Addicks.

No details of the deal are available, but it is thought that some additional cash will be available to try and secure promotion from League 1 (Charlton are currently 2nd).   The South-East London club enjoyed several years in the Premiership, but the immediate target will be to secure Championship football.

Charlton has a 27,000 seater stadium and its own extensive training ground.   The Thames Gateway development offers the potential for additional supporters.
