Catch 22 for MLS

MLS captured only seven per cent of the US television market for soccer from August to December.  A third of viewers watched the Mexican Liga, reflecting the importance of the Hispanic audience.   22 per cent watched the Engish Premier League.

European leagues typically get about 50 per cent of their revenues from television, the MLS gets only 20 per cent.   Moreover, much of the current television contract goes to supporting the national teams.   Each franchise gets just $5 million a year.    This sets up a  Catch 22 as they are discouraged from signing the more expensive players that could attract bigger television audiences.
