Carlos Tévez row at City

Carlos Tévez says that he wants to leave Manchester City and that the decision is his alone.  He claims that he has not fallen out with the manager Roberto Mancini and praises the support of the owner Sheikh Mansour.   It appears that he has fallen out with the chief executive at the club which is the first time I can recall a player in the recent past wanting to leave because he was not on good terms with a senior manager not on the playing staff.   There is, of course, a first time for everything, but no doubt there is more to this than meets the eye.

Rodney Marsh claimed on Radio 5 this morning that Tévez was the highest paid player in Europe on £286,000 a week and that this was tax free.   I have no means of verifying this claim, although I would be surprised if his whole salary was tax free even if some was paid abroad in respect of image rights.

Commentary in the press this morning suggests that if Tévez does go that is the end of Manchester City’s title hopes.   It would certainly be a serious blow.   I am not a supporter of either Manchester club, although I have good friends who are supporters of each of them.  But it does seem to me that the media is very eager to look for negative stories about City.
