Big losses in French football

A comprehesive report on the financial state of French football shows big and increasing losses among leading clubs.  In 2009-10 top flight clubs lost €130m, four times the €34m deficit of the previous campaign.   However, these losses are small beer by comparison with those in the Premiership and even in the much vaunted Bundesliga clubs lose money.

The French league has been hit hard by declining transfer activity on the part of normally big spending English and Spanish clubs.  Transfer activity hit a four year low.  However, it is also evident that wages are out of control with some clubs with examples of clubs putting almost their entire income into players’ pay packets.
