Bayern Munich and Chelsea: the contrast

Both Bayern Munich and Chelsea are big spenders on top players.   Over the past three seasons, Bayern have accounted for more than a quarter of the Bundesliga’s total spending.   However, Chelsea lost £67m in their most recent accounts while Bayern make a healthy pre-tax profit every year.

In 2010-11 Bayern’s commercial income was the highest in the world.  Global television revenues have been becoming more important in the Premier League for some time.  Even so, most revenue is still generated locally.   Bayern come from a prosperous city in the most economically powerful country in Europe.

One fifth of Bayern’s season ticket holders pay just €120 a year.   This is made possible through cross-subsidisation by the club’s base of corporate sponsors.

Not surprisingly, Bayern are big backers of financial fair play.   Uefa president Michael Platini, no friend of the Premier League, likes to portray them as a ‘model club’.
