Founded in 1870, the geographically isolated club is based in the town of Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway. The team plays at Stair Park – Capacity: 5,600. In January 2009, Stranraer were estimated by their chairman Nigel Redhead to have a 50/50 chance of surviving to the end of the season.  They were around £250,000 in debt to the bank and other businesses.  Redhead said new lights, strips and works done to the Stair Park ground have cost the club a lot of money.  Home crowds had dwindled to around 250, whereas they used to be able to count on nearly 1,000 supporters.  The club was just about managing to pay players’ wages, amounting to £250,000 a year.  The club’s only real asset is its social club, but it is a significant part of their income. In response to these problems, on 22nd January 2009 a consortium launched the Friends of Stranraer FC to try to secure the clubs future through donations from the football community.
