The club was formed in 1879 and in 1898 moved to the Athletic Ground in Seamer Road. The ground was renamed The McCain Stadium in a pioneering sponsorship deal in 1988 (AKA ‘The Theatre of Chips’). Promoted to the full Football League in 1987 the ‘Seadogs’ spent 12 seasons there before being relegated in season 1998-99. In the Conference, losses and debts piled up and by August 2000 the club went into a CVA.

Promoted to the full Football League in 1987 the ‘Seadogs’ spent 12 seasons there before being relegated in season 1998-99. In the Conference, losses and debts piled up and by August 2000 the club went into a CVA. The club came out of administration in September 2001, and two months later Malcolm Reynolds, a local businessman, took over 52% of Scarborough’s shares together with accountant Philip Webster, who had previously been a Hull City director. However, losses continued to mount and the Inland Revenue pursued a winding-up petition for £289,000 tax owed, and the club went into a second administration in January 2003. After season 2005/06 the club was compulsorily relegated from the Conference for going into voluntary administration for a third time and started 2006/07 season in Conference North with 10 points deducted. They came last and the pressure created by what would have been another relegation forced the club to be liquidated. A new club was established by the Seadog Trust under the banner Scarborough Athletic on 25 June 2007, and one year later a new club, Scarborough Town, also came into existence.
