The club was formed in 1884 as an offshoot of Derbyshire County Cricket Club. It was a founder members of The Football League when it was launched in 1888. In 1891 they absorbed Derby Midland F.C. In 1895 the club moved to a new stadium, The Baseball Ground, which became their home for the next 102 years until the creation of Pride Park Stadium, which was opened in 2007 – holding 33,597 spectators. On 11 June 2007, the club announced plans to expand the capacity to 44,000 for the 2008/2009 season, subject to retaining their Premiership status.
