The club was founded in 1883 by employees of Singers, a bicycle firm, changing its name in 1898 from Singers F.C. to Coventry City. In April 2003 the club announced massive debts totalling just over £20 million but also the completion of the first stage of their new ground – a £60 million multi-purpose, 32,500 capacity stadium (the Ricoh Arena), managed by a company set up by the football club and Coventry City Council. Completed in time for the 2005-06 season, the stadium incorporates a 6,000 square-metre exhibition hall, a hotel and a leisure club.

The Ricoh Arena hosts a cashless till system inside the football stadium, which is the first of its kind in the country. You top up (similar to pay-as-you-go mobile phones) and present your card at the till and the cost of your purchased items, e.g. pie and chips are deducted from your credit. Camera and photocopier manufacturer Ricoh’s sponsorship deal is reported to be worth £10 million over 10 years.
Coventry City’s only major honour is the FA Cup – won in 1987 when they beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2.
Turnover and pre-tax profit figures are in millions.
