Hibs Defend Canny Approach - 01/02/2008
It is now five years since the financial meltdown in Scottish football in 2002 and Hibernian have defended their prudent fiscal policy after stinging criticisms from former boss John Collins. After walking out, Collins hit out at the board's ultra-prudent approach, claiming it had prevented him pursuing a number of signing targets he had identified. The club's debt, which once stood at more than £16m, reduced at the end of the last financial year to £2.8m which substantially reduces interest payments. Pointedly the club statement said: 'Trading at a loss by overspending on player costs in an attempt to buy short-term success is unsustainable and is a strategy which has been discredited.' The 'windfalls' gained from player sales over the past couple of years are unprecedented in the club's history and are unlikely to be repeated. The club has spent £4.9m on a new training centre and is planning to complete work on rebuilding Easter Road. Three new stands have been built in the last 20 years and completing the fourth would take capacity to 21,000.
