Woe Amid Joy At Wednesday - 20/01/2008
Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws certainly enjoyed his club's derby victory over Sheffield United - it gave him a welcome distraction from the money worries which continue to beset the Owls. The board maintains that there is no chance that the club will be next to go into administration, although debts are estimated at £26m and Laws is under pressure to sell up to five players. Millionaire casino magnate David Allen quit as chairman after threatening legal action against fan websites, then director Keith Addy was forced to resign and apologise for making a racist remark. Speculation is rife that the club will have new owners before the end of February. Allen reckoned that new ownership was the only way forward but was frustrated by progress, particularly as there has been no lack of prospective buyers for the historic club. So far, though, no purchasers have been able to negotiate their way through the club's complex and diversified shareholdings which include a 10 per cent stake held by supporters.
