Usmanov Increases Arsenal Holding - 17/02/2008
Contrary to expectations, Alisher Usmanov, the Russian billionaire whose interest in Arsenal appeared to have been thwarted by the board, has increased his company's stake in the Premiership club to 24 per cent. Red and White Holdings, the Arsenal investment vehicle he co-owns with business partner Farhard Moshiri, paid £1.7m for 190 shares at £9,000 apiece. The latest rise puts the Red and White shareholding almost on a par with Danny Fiszman's 24.1 per cent stake at the top of the Arsenal share register. One of the effects of the lockdown agreement between Arsenal directors has been to bring the share price down and it did not increase after Usmanov's latest purchase. Red and White said it was still the intention to take its stake to about 25 per cent. 'That has not changed. We are long-term investors,' it said.
Usmanov and The Lockdown - 18/11/2007
Not only are Arsenal currently top of the Premiership, they also represent the most successful attempt by a top club to fight off foreign investors. Arsenal fans are wondering how long Russian billionaire Alisher Usamov will retain his 23% stake in the club given that he has sustained a £20m loss. He was buying shares at their peak at around £10,500 each and they have now slipped back to £7,500. He thus paid over the odds for a stake that will never be enough to acquire the club. Arsenal directors have staged a 'lockdown' and agreed not to sell their shares for a two year period.
