The club was formed in 1877 and is based at Gresty Road (stadium capacity: 10,153). Reputedly named after Princess Alexandra, the team is nicknamed 'The Railwaymen' due to that town's links with the rail industry. The club is recognised for its youth policy and has been responsible for developing several England and other home country internationals, a system nurtured by Dario Gradi, an ex-manager who served the club between June 1983 and July 2007 before taking up a new role as the club's Technical Director.
