The Red Knights consortium that tried to buy Manchester United had the backing of two Asian tycoons.   They attracted support from Malaysian airline entrepreneur Tony Fernades and Singapore billionaire Peter Lim.

Fernades, the founder of low cost airline Air Asia, has amassed a personal fortune of £230m.  He is a West Ham fan, but thought about becoming United’s shirt sponsor last year.   Peter Lim is ranked as the eight-richest man in Singapore by Forbes magazine with an estimated fortune of £1 billion.  He owns a series of Manchester United themed bars in Asia, although he made a failed attempt to buy Liverpool last year.

Their backing would make a Red Knights bid more credible, but a sale to the Omani royal family seems more likely as it would give them a trophy purchase to add to securing the 2022 World Cup.
