Wrexham FC have been hit by a winding up order over an unpaid tax bill.   Revenue and Customs issued the winding up order on Friday over a debt of £200,000.  Wrexham are currently in the play off places in the Blue Square Premiership and therefore have a chance of returning to the Football League next season.

A statement from the club said, ‘That HMRC should take this action at all is a source of great disappointment and frustration.   If the club were able to access a funding pot to clear that debt, then the club’s future could be secured.’

However, Revenue and Customs has become increasingly exasperated with football clubs treating their tax liabilities as a credit card and has brought actions for far smaller sums.

Local hotelier Stephanie Booth who is interested in acquiring the club has urged Wrexham Supporters’ Trust to settle the debt, but they are understandably far from keen.
