Wrexham deal agreed

The fans are set to become the new owners of Wrexham FC, with a takeover deal completed. Wrexham Supporters’ Trust (WST), which has been the preferred bidder, said it would take over the day-to-day running of the club on Tuesday.

Earlier, one of the club’s owners Geoff Moss threatened to talk to a rival unless he received a deposit by 5 p.m. yesterday.  A joint statement said a ‘suitable financial agreement has been reached’.

Right up until the moment the deal was done it looked as though the long drawn out saga might continue amidst concerns about a sponsorship deal between the club and pub chain Greene King. The company signed the deal last year to sponsor the football club and the Crusaders rugby league side, who were ground sharing at Wrexham’s Racecourse home.

It is understood the trust were concerned that because the Crusaders fell out of the Super League earlier this year they would be taking on the liability for any penalties associated with the deal. A spokesperson for Greene King said they are in discussion with Wrexham about the future of the sponsorship agreement and the sale of the club.

The trust’s own projections suggest it could lose around £750,000 by the end of the season if home crowds dip from gates of around 4,000 to 3,000.   Hopefully, the present good form will continue and boost attendances.
