Wigan Need To Sort Policing Row

15/07/2005

Greater Manchester Police have issued promoted Wigan with a High Court summons over a long running row over the cost of policing matches. They will withdraw cover for the club's forthcoming home fixtures if an outstanding bill of about £270,000 is not settled by then. Wigan owner Dave Whelan is happy to go to court, but the FA Premier League, concerned about the knock-on effect and embarrassment the cancellation of fixtures would cause, has put pressure on the club to get the matter sorted. Manager Paul Jewell does believe that the club is being overcharged by GMP. 'It seems to me that we are paying more to have matches policed than anyone else', he said. 'I wonder whether Manchester United had to pay for the costs of policing the protests over Glazer's takeover.'
