Is Germany a Football Fans' Paradise?

02/06/2008

This is the question posed in Deloitte's latest annual review of football finance. State of the art facilities at German grounds include designated standing areas, and clubs have kept ticket prices relatively low. As a result, the Bundesliga once again has the highest average attendances in Europe. German club revenues have increased strongly with a new broadcasting deal, moving the league into second place behind the English Premiership in revenue terms. What's more, Germany is now the most profitable league in Europe, with an operating margin of 18 per cent, three times that of the Premiership. However, the price of Bundesliga clubs' very good financial performance seems to be a struggle to reach the later stages of European club competition in recent years. Moreover, we hear that the system that prevents individuals from owning clubs is about to change and we hope to publish an authoritative analysis of this development at a later date.
