Wages soar at top clubs

In the last year or two many people have seen their wages frozen or had very small increases.   Others have actually seen their pay cut.  But it’s a different story in the world of football.   There has been double digit growth in Premier League wages for the last three years according to the latest Deloitte Annual Review of Football Finance.

In the last year or two many people have seen their wages frozen or had very small increases.   Others have actually seen their pay cut.  But it’s a different story in the world of football.   There has been double digit growth in Premier League wages for the last three years according to the latest Deloitte Annual Review of Football Finance.

The bean counters at Deloitte know and love their football as well as understanding finance and they are arguing that in effect it is not sustainable to have £67 out of every £100 of income at top flight clubs being spent on wages.   This produces very thin profit margins at a time when credit is very hard to obtain.

Despite all the talk of a break even objective at Chelsea, they have the highest wage bill in the Premiership at £167m.   As Manchester City splash out in an effort to become one of the top four, their wage bill has gone up from £54m to £83m.

The publication of the authoritative Deloitte report edited by Dam Jones is always a major event in the world of football finance and we will be providing detailed analysis over the next few days.
