Unlike their Premier League rivals, Manchester City and Arsenal, who pay bonuses to their players for reaching the Champions League, United’s contracts assume they are always in the competition. All players paid more than £20,000 a week are docked 25 per cent of their salary if they fail to qualify.
The additional £38m is more than the £22.5m United will sacrifice if they fail to qualify under the terms of their sponsorship deal with adidas.
