United players would get £38m from final win

Manchester United’s players will be £38m better off if they beat Ajax in the Europa League final next week. Under the club’s unusual pay policy, automatic qualification for next season’s Champions League would mean that United players would get a 25 per cent pay rise.   They would also receive a £1m bonus under the club’s performance incentive scheme.

Unlike their Premier League rivals, Manchester City and Arsenal, who pay bonuses to their players for reaching the Champions League, United’s contracts assume they are always in the competition.   All players paid more than £20,000 a week are docked 25 per cent of their salary if they fail to qualify.

The additional £38m is more than the £22.5m United will sacrifice if they fail to qualify under the terms of their sponsorship deal with adidas.
