The meteoric rise of Fleetwood Town

Yesterday’s play off final win that saw Fleetwood Town go up to League 1 was their sixth promotion in nine seasons.   The Cod Army can thank entrepreneur Andy Pilley who has pumped over £10 million into the club, although they argue that they got some of their best players on the cheap.   Defender Nathan Pond was with them in the North-West Counties League when they were playing in front of gates of as little as 81.

There must be some limit to how far the club can go, given that the population of the town is 27,000. Indeed, it calls to mind the rise of Rushden & Diamonds who also had a meteoric rise to League 1 and whose stadium now lies empty.

However, Pilley runs a gas and electricity business based in Fleetwood and that is probably more stable than selling Doc Martens.   The aim is to make the club self-sustaining, although many have had that aspiration and found it more difficult than they thought.
