MK Dons have done better than I expected in establishing a local support base. I thought that many people moving into the area would have retained their allegiance to London clubs and no doubt many do. However, they may treat MK Dons as a second club. It is also evident that some families in the area regard it as a safe and accessible environment in which to watch football.
Charlton fans used to chant ‘Woolwich rejects’ to the bemusement of Arsenal fans, but they were being ironic. If Arsenal had not moved to more affluent North London, Charlton would not have developed as a league club.
