Steep hill for Chelsea to climb

Following their victory over Arsenal, Chelsea appear to be in recovery mode on the pitch.  However, although their captain John Terry thinks they can still make it to fourth place, it will require an outstanding win ratio.

Failure to gain a place in the Champions League (for the first time under Abramovich) could cost them £40m in sponsorship and gate money.

The author of the Swiss Ramble blog has taken his usual forensic look at their finances.  As usual, its full of well supported insights.   One comment that struck me was,  ‘It may be a surprise to some, but Chelsea’s total net spend of £40 million in the last two years was only mid-table. Not only were they over £100 million behind the Manchester clubs (City £151 million, United £145 million), but they were also outspent by the likes of West Ham, West Brom and Crystal Palace in this period.’
