Scottish football boss calls for summer season

Following a similar call from Forfar Athletic, the boss of Arbroath has called for the Scottish football season to be extended into the summer months after the effects of the recent severe weather, the worst snowfall in Scotland for 40 years.

He suggests that matches should be played in May and June, leaving July for holidays.   Under his plan the winter break would be in January and February which wouldn’t help this season.  One consequence of global warming is that one is that there are likely to be more infrequent but more intense cold snaps.


It’s smaller clubs like Arbroath that are being hit particularly hard by the weather as cash is king.  Things are probably not so bad there as they used to be at East Stirling when players were paid ten pounds a match – in pound coins.   With the number of fake one pound coins in circulation, probably some of those didn’t work in vending machines if players fancied an Irn Bru  (claimed to be Scotland’s national drink, although what about a dram?).


Arbroath has some Christmas parties booked for its clubhouse which should bring in some money.  Let’s hope people can get there.
