After a meeting at Hamilton’s ground on Thursday evening, several First Division sides are said to be ready to carry out the move in a bid to force a restructure of Scottish football.

All First Division clubs bar Partick Thistle and Airdrie United, plus Dundee and Queen of the South have signed a letter signalling their intent to leave the SFL. Dundee’s signature is on condition that they are relegated from the Scottish premier league.

It’s understood a second SPL tier of 12 clubs rather than 10 is the preferred option. How such an enlarged SPL would relate to the remnants of the Scottish Football League is an interesting question. Some smaller clubs, who get smaller attendances than in the second level of the English non-league, might be in jeopardy. The situation of Rangers was apparently discussed, but was not seen as relevant to any immediate moves.

Les Gray, the chairman of Hamilton Accies, is very much the driving force behind this move. Interviewed on Radio 5 on Saturday morning, he saw this as the last chance to get something sorted out before next season, otherwise some clubs might have to go part-time.
