The accounts reveal that the club took out a £5m loan to help finance the redevelopment of Elland Road’s East Stand.   The extensive project is expected to cost £7m in total.   It has attracted criticism from some supporters who argued that the money should have been spent on the playing squad.

United’s home crowds have fallen by around 4,000 on average this season.   They achieved more than 27,000 a game during the 2010-11 Championship season.   Their current average is 23,451 which still gives them the fourth largest attendance in the Championship behind West Ham, Derby County and Southampton.
