West Ham co-owner David Gold has called for a wage freeze in the Premier League. The amount clubs could be pay out would be capped at this year’s wage bill and only increased by the rate of inflation thereafter. Eventually there would be a freeze on ticket prices.
Gold says that he is nothing against clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City overspending but, if they do, the money should be re-distributed to ‘compliant’ clubs, presumably including West Ham. The problem is that many clubs might welcome a salary cap in principle, but actually setting it up is another matter, given that there will be winners and losers from any arrangement.
Gold says that the Premier League is one of the best in the world, but in large part that is achieved by paying high salaries to attract world class players.
