Regardless of the results of today’s games Greek shipping magnate and former Olympiacos owner Evangelos Mariankis is set to complete his takeover of Nottingham Forest.   This will end the controversial five year reign of Kuwaiti businessman Fawaz al-Hawasi who has managed to get through eight managers.  Let’s hope it’s not a case of out of the frying pan into the fire.

Mariankis has now been cleared of match fixing charges in Greece.  It was alleged that the president of the Greek Football Federation helped him to choose specific referees to oversee key games.  He was accused of having ‘approached and tried to use policemen, judges, politicians and other powerful figures … as part of the planning and establshment of a criminal organization.’

These problems should not pose any obstacle in terms of the Football League’s relaxed ‘fit and proper persons’ test.
