The club was floated on the London Stock Exchange by the previous owner and chairman ‘Deadly’ Doug Ellis in May 1997, but in 2006 full control of the club was acquired by the American businessman Randy Lerner. In 2016, Lerner sold the club to Recon Group, owned by Chinese businessman Xia Jiantong. The sale was completed on 14 June 2016 for a reported £76 million.
