A.S. Roma was founded in 1927 by Italo Foschi, with the merger of three older Italian Football Championship clubs from the city of Rome; Roman FC, SS Alba-Audace and Fortitudo-Pro Roma SGS. The purpose of the merger was to give Rome a strong club to rival that of dominant Northern Italian clubs of the time. Honours include 3 Italian Championships (Serie A), 9 Coppa Italia trophies and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (1960–61). Home matches are played at the municipally owned Stadio Olimpico (Capacity: 72,700).

Since 1999, the club has been run as a joint stock company with shares trading on the Borsa Italiana under the symbol ASR. As of 2009 Roma’s shares were distributed thus: 67.1% to Compagnia Italpetroli SpA (the Sensi family holding), 2.7% to Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena SpA, 2.5% to Danilo Coppola and 27.7% to other shareholders.
