Fans influence signing through social media

The growing influence of the social media as agenda setters is well known.  The conventional media increasingly write stories about what is on the social media.   But this appears to the be the first instance of fans’ reaction on Twitter discouraging a club from signing a player who had a serious criminal conviction.

One could argue that it saved West Ham from reputational damage, but the counter argument is that it looks unprofessional and suggests the club did not think enough about possible reactions.  Either way it’s an interesting development.
