The club was founded in 1897, originally joining the Northants League and by 1901 joining the Southern League. Home fixtures are played at the Sixfields Stadium (since October 1994) which has a capacity of 7,650. A financial crisis in 1992 over the failure to pay two months’ players’ wages (which amounted to about £64,000) eventually led to the foundation of Britain’s first ever Supporters’ Trust.
