"If you want some accessible but informative insight into football then I suggest you couldn't do better than the Political Economy of Football website, which is not only intelligible but comes with the added bonus of being written by Addicks fan Wyn Grant."

New mood of optimism at Barrow AFC

There is a new mood of optimism at Barrow AFC, the successors to an historic Football League side.  The club is currently top of the Vanarama Conference North and its takeover has been successfully completed with the grant of approval by the Football Association.

New owner millionaire Paul Casson aims to push average attendances above 2,000, which seems a realistic target given Saturday's gate of 1,741.   Barrow is relatively isolated and there is no competition in the immediate vicinity, League 2 Morecambe being the nearest Football League side.

Casson grew up in Barrow, but is now based in the United States.  90 per cent of fans backed his £600,000 takeover and he has pledged that he will put £1.2m into the club over the next two years.  Quite a lot of the money will go into improving the facilities at the club which he considers have fallen below an acceptable standard.
