Futebol Clube do Porto was founded in 1893 by wine-salesman António Nicolau de Almeida, who had come into contact with the game duiring a trip to England. The club has won the Portuguese Liga 24 times, the Portuguese Cup 18 times, two European Cups and one UEFA Cup. Home matches are played at the Estádio do Dragão (capacity: 50,400) but the club also encompasses a range of other sports which are to be housed at a new multi-sport arena close to the stadium due to be completed by 2010.

FC Porto is at the forefront of merchandising initiatives in Portugal, with several club stores (Loja Azul) in the city, co-branded with official kit supplier Nike, and an annual fair called the Feria Portomania organised during pre-season.
