"If you want some accessible but informative insight into football then I suggest you couldn't do better than the Political Economy of Football website, which is not only intelligible but comes with the added bonus of being written by Addicks fan Wyn Grant."

Football League or Dog Rubbish United?

It's no contest as far as poultry wholesaler Dai Davis, the driving force behind AFC Fylde is concerned. The club is now three steps away from the Football League and plans to be there by 2022.

Known at one time as Kirkham and Wesham, the club rebranded and moved to their own stadium.  They see their appeal as now encompassing the Lytham St. Annes area from their location south-east of Blackpool.

Davis has brought on board David Haythornwaite who had hoped to acquire Blackpool from the Oystons, but was disappointed on two occasions.

Lancashire is not exactly short of football clubs.   Apart from Blackpool in the Championship, Preston are not far away and, according to Peter Ridsdale, will be one of the two or three biggest clubs by turnover in League 1 next year.

Rushden & Diamonds eventually failed and they did not have league competition nearby.   Is this another case of vision outstripping reality?

Don't forget Fleetwood Town FC

Let's not forget those arrivistes Fleetwood Town FC who will rock up in League 2 in August, on the back of heavy investment. The Blackpool area is clearly a fertile one for parvenus.
