The club was formed in 1878. Promoted to the Premier League for the 2002/03 season, the club was relegated for 2003/04, re-promoted for 2004/05 and relegated again in 2006. One of the founder members the Football League (which was formed in 1888), the club was a plc quoted on the AIM stock exchange until November 2004. When converting back into a private company shareholders were offered one new share in a specially-created bid vehicle or a £72.50 cash alternative. The cash option valued the club at that time at £10.14 million.
