The Need For More Finance - 17/02/2008
Leeds United have announced a four-year contract with Italian kit manufacturers Macron, a deal which Ken Bates hopes will be worth £5m. Leeds supremo Bates described the agreement as the most lucrative in existence outside the Premiership. However, it should be borne in mind that the figure is 50 per cent of the yearly rent that United pay for Elland Road and Thorp Arch. This illustrates how easily United's moeny is swallowed up, even without debts of £35m. The club needs more investment. United are only six months beyond insolvency; they do not own their stadium or training ground and do not look like re-purchasing either property in the immediate future. Neither fact makes investment unrealistic or unreasonably risky, but they are likely to affect the sums of money that prospective investors are prepared to put on the table. The biggest selling point of a shareholding in Leeds is that the cost of acquiring shares should now be a fraction of what it would be in the Premiership. United need to promote themselves as a top flight club that have lost their way, but the credibility of such a claim would be helped if the club were able to win promotion this season.
