Reprieve for Bluebirds - 20/03/2008
FA Cup semi-finalists Cardiff City had won a reprieve in a legal battle which, if they had lost it, could have seen them immediately go into administration. Swiss investment bank Langston wanted a £24m loan repaid immediately. Cardiff's former chairman Sam Hammam has been named by the club's barrister as the man behind Langston. The bank had sought 'summary judgment' meaning that the club should pay up now. But this claim was dismissed. As a result, the case could now could go forward to a full trial if both sides cannot resolve the issues within two months. Cardiff supremo Peter Ridsdale said that he was confident of winning the case if it did go to full trial, but would prefer to settle it by negotiation. The club has spent almost £500,000 on the legal battle which is money that could otherwise have been invested in the squad.

Cardiff Face Their Day In Court - 06/03/2008
Cardiff City chairman and former Leeds supremo Peter Ridsdale admits that a court case to take place next week may be the only way of solving a wrangle with Langston over a £24m loan. The club's biggest creditor wants the debt repaid now, but City officials say it is not due until 2016. Ridsdale would like an out of court settlement, but admits that is unlikely to happen. He has previously warned that Cardiff will be forced into administration if they lose the court case, but he said that whatever the outcome the city would still have a football club and a new ground to play in. 'If Langston were to succeed, we wouldn't be able to repay the debt,' he said. 'Then someone would have to pick up the pieces. Whatever the outcome of the court case there will be a Cardiff City playing in a brand new stadium in August 2009.' When Ridsdale arrived at Ninian Park in 2005 after being head-hunted by then owner Sam Hammam, Cardiff were losing £9m a year and had debts of £30m with the new stadium project looking in tatters. The loan with Langston was taken out by Hammam and their solicitors claim the board was mismanaging its finances and misleading supporters and said the money had to be paid immediately.
