Wrexham face closure threat

With their players effectively on strike after the club ran out of money, Wrexham FC face a real threat of closure.   The club has been mired in financial problems for years, but the latest blow came when Crusaders, who have shared the ground, withdrew their application for a Rugby Super League license because they had run out of cash.

With their players effectively on strike after the club ran out of money, Wrexham FC face a real threat of closure.   The club has been mired in financial problems for years, but the latest blow came when Crusaders, who have shared the ground, withdrew their application for a Rugby Super League license because they had run out of cash.

All hope of a rescue package now rests with the Wrexham Supporters’ Trust.   One of the immediate challenges is an outstanding tax bill estimated at between £45,000 and £50,000.    The Trust have agreed in principle a deal with the local university, Glyndwyr, who would buy the assets of the club while the Trust would run the football side.

The players have not been paid and refused to play in two pre-season friendlies in case they pick up injuries that would harm their chance of finding another club should Wrexham fold.
