Why has no one bought Everton?
Why has no one bought Everton? It's a good question to ask as the club has effectively been on the market for years. This thorough report tries to give an answer. Part of the answer is about the city of Liverpool - it's not a wealthy city. True, but it's also a fanatical football city, albeit with two teams.
Some of our comments about the brand upset Everton fans so we have deleted them. Nevertheless, it's interesting that in these discussions no one ever talks much about the name of a club although with most commercial products that would be regarded as a key choice.
I'm amazed that some people choose to criticise this article?
To reiterate comments expressed elsewhere, this is a very good article and is certainly an eye opener for fellow blues who believe that all things are rosy in the corridors of power at Goodison Park.
I would personally like to know, although it is clearly obvious, why the club has failed to initiate a rights issue to generate much needed cash for the manager? Even the much maligned Peter Johnson raised £15m for the clubs coffers through a rights issue in 1996. Why hasn’t Mr Kenwright done something similar when such funds were needed to fund the Kings Dock?
Perhaps Mr Kenwright was putting his interests before the interests of Everton Football Club?
In addition to your points it may be worthwhile commenting on the fact that the Kenwright era has also overseen the introduction of numerous mortgages/charges, many of which remain outstanding. Of particular concern to myself is the fact that the club are now borrowing against future Premier League broadcasting and merit placement income some two years in advance of when it is actually due.
Perhaps this recent spate of ‘advances’ and associated charges are what caused ‘other operating costs’ in the clubs accounts to mysteriously jump from £11m in 2006/7 to £22m in 2007/8? Perhaps this jump may relate to the increasing costs associated with the lease of Finch Farm? Who knows? Unfortunately the club failed to explain this in the accounts.
Finally, you also refer to the net debt in your article; it may be worth investigating the actual total debt liabilities that have burdened the club over the past 10 years or so. This total debt figure, the money actually owed to creditors, is far greater than the more palatable £38m net debt figures spoken of today
You what?
"Teams like 'Arsenal' and 'Spurs' have names that convey an image of vigour and fighting spirit."
That statement alone destroys all credibility in this article.
Everton's BLAND name just happens to have been so BLAND that numerous and highly successful teams in South America (yes that BLAND continent) adopted it for their clubs.
Equally saying Arsenal have "fighting spirit" is ridiculous as does Spurs.
To be fair
The linked report is actually entitled "Why Has Nobody Bought Everton?" and is clearly referring to the past few years. It's main point is less about the merits of Everton as a brand or Liverpool as a city, but more about the fact that the club never makes a profit, so is not attractive to a future investor.
Gotta say
what truly awful writing. I mean atrocious, and not just because I'm an Everton fan.
"Why has no one ever bought Everton?"
Everton have been bought quite a few times, so this should read "Why hasn't an investor spotted Everton?" you know, something that makes sense.
Then there's the poor excuse for what that 'journalist' got down to as cold hard facts; No one has bought Everton because the names kinda bland in other countries. Nice opinion. Have you been to these countries and garnered their opinions on what they think of the name? I'm guessing you haven't. I'm also guessing you don't know who Everton's sponsor are, or what they have done in the Far East, or how popular Li Tie was. Honest suggestion; delete this, think, start again.
I dont think the name of a club is a factor
I dont think someone looking to buy a football team in the
premiership uses the name of the club as a key factor. Where the club is
located and the state of there stadium is higher up on the priority
list than the name of the club. If manchester city where still at maine
road do you think they would have the owner they now have, THE ANSWER
WOULD BE NO.
One of the main reasons we dont have a buyer is
because they would know that everton need a knew ground and expansion of
the ground would be very limited and it would cost a fair bit of money
for a knew one, plus are owner is cautious about who he would sell it
to,maybe to cautious but he being an evertonian wouldnt want to the club
end up with serious amounts of debt which has happened with clubs in
the league who where taken over with good intentions and ended up with
many problems.
There will be a hell of a lot more to it than what
we know, but as far as the name of the club goes well thats a load of
nonsense
Poor
Utter shite. Is this the best you can do? Your opinion is based on no evidence whatsoever. Both your opinion of the brand and the city are wide of the mark.
Did you read the linked article?
The evidence is in the LINKED TO REPORT which the majority of angry fans responding to this article seem not to have read. Message to the more dense faction of Everton fans reading this:
"You're supposed to click on the link - it's how the Internets work."
You're welcome.

Thank you very much indeed for your thoughtful insight, lack of London bias and clearing the whole issue up.
