Villa sale rumours persist

A statement by Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner has done little to quell rumours of a possible takeover. Lerner has said that he will address the sale issue in the summer as he does not want to distract the club as it ensures that it is safe from relegation.

Lerner has been seen at matches rarely over the past two years.   Following a change in his personal life, he spends more time in the United States.  He seems to have lost his affection for English football.

It has been suggested that two Texas billionaires associated with Major League Baseball may be interested in taking over the club and maintaining American ownership.  Villa have four matches in Texas set up for the summer.

The price tag has been reported to be £200m or £250m.   Either way it would represent a substantial profit for Lerner who paid £62.5m for the club in 2006.   However, some think that the price tag is on the high side and might deter prospective purchasers.

Villa are a club that have punched below their weight for some time, but it would require substantial spending to realise their potential as a leading club for the Midlands.  Indeed, Midlands football in general has been in the doldrums for some time, ceding leadership to London, Manchester and now Liverpool.
