Stadium for Cornwall gets green light

The chairman of financially troubled Truro City, Kevin Heaney, has claimed that the absence of planning permission for a new stadium was holding back the club's future development.   The Planning Committee of Cornwall Council gave its outline consent yesterday for the Stadium for Cornwall project.


Council members voted 14-4 in favour of the 10,000 seater stadium, which would see both the Cornish Pirates rugby team and Truro City FC  playing there, as well as other events being staged.     However, the final decision rests with Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.


Probably a bigger obstacle than Mr Pickles is who is going to stump up the £24m to build the stadium in these financially troubled times.    Quite understandably, the Council (which has made substantial cutbacks in its staffing) has said that no public money would be available.   But Mr Heaney does not seem to have much spare cash with Truro City players unpaid and an outstanding tax bill to deal with.
