The club was founded in 1885, as St. Mary's YMA, and now play at the St Mary's Stadium (capacity 32,689). The club has won the FA Cup once, and their highest-ever league finish was second in the top flight in 1983–84. Southampton Football Club Ltd was floated in January 1997 as part of Southampton Leisure Holdings plc, a property and investment vehicle. On 8 July 2009 the club was purchased by German-born Swiss businessman Markus Liebherr.
