The club was founded in 1886 and were first elected to the Football League proper (in Division 3 North) in 1950 following the decision to expand from 88 to 92 clubs. The club plays at the New Meadow ground, also called the Prostar Stadium as part of a sponsorship deal, which was opened in July 2007. (capacity 9,875).
