The club was founded in 1907. It was a founder member of the Football League Division Three North in 1921. Since 1974 Rochdale have played in the fourth tier of the English Football League. Home matches are played at the Spotland Stadium – capacity 10,250. The stadium was built exclusively for Rochdale in 1920, but since 1988 the ground has been jointly owned by the football club, Rochdale Council and Rochdale Hornets rugby league team.
