Referees in the Professional Game Match Organisation have landed a seven figure sponsorship deal over three years.  Their new sponsors are the Tune Group, who own Air Asia, emphasising once again how important the Asian market is to top flight football in England.  The benefits for the sponsors are clear: access to over 2,000 games and 3 billion viewers worldwide.

It also shows that we are very much in the era of the celebrity referee.  Whether this is a good thing for the game is open to question.   One doesn’t pay to watch the referee and a good official is the one that one doesn’t notice.
