The problems of the SPL

In this article interim Celtic manager Neil Lennon contrasts the boom times in the Scottish Premier League ten years ago with the situation today.  He does not think investment is the answer.  Even £70m could not guarantee progression in the Champions League.   His solution is to expand the SPL from 12 to 14 clubs.

But would bringing in another two relatively weak clubs change all that much?  The real problem is the chasm between the Old Firm and the rest and the fact that Celtic and Rangers do not come up against strong competition that stimulates them to raise their game.  The idea of them joining the English competition has been raised more than once but has never got anywhere.
