The club was formed as Lyon Olympique Universitaire in 1899 but was only nationally established as a club in 1950. Olympique Lyonnais is owned by Rhône businessman Jean-Michel Aulas, who acquired the club in 1987. He serves as the founder and chief operating officer of CEGID (Compagnie Européenne de Gestion par l'Informatique Décentralisée). The club currently operates on the European Stock Exchange under the name OL Groupe, initialed OLG (completed IPO in February 2007). In 2009, the annual Deloitte Football Money League ranked Lyon twelfth biggest club by revenue - €155.7 million for the 2007–08 season.

Winners of seven French Championships in a row from 2001/02 to 2007/08 (including the double in 2008 when they won their fourth French Cup), Lyon play home matches at the 41,044 seater Stade de Gerland.
